NORWICH, VERMONT

Mascoma Bank’s Norwich, VT, location was built in 1840 as a single-family home. From 1948 through 1963, the St. Francis of Assisi Parish worshiped in the former Stimson home on Main St. The first floor converted into a chapel, the second into apartments. The group sold the building in 1963 to the First National Bank of White River, using the proceeds to help build their new church on Beaver Meadow Road.

The First National Bank of White River Junction was Norwich’s first bank. The year 1965 saw the grand opening of the building that housed both the First National Bank, a commercial bank, and the Inter-State Trust Company, a savings bank. The two operated simultaneously across the floor from one and other until 1977, when they merged to become the First-Inter State Bank. First Inter-State changed to First Twin-State Bank in 1983 before merging with Proctor Bank and the Green Mountain Bank in 1991. Mascoma Bank took ownership of the location in 1996.
