BETHEL, VERMONT

The historic building on Main Street in Bethel, Vermont, was erected for $30,000 in 1907 as the new home of the National White River Bank. The bank experienced a brief pause during the Bank Holiday of 1933 until regulators deemed it solvent and cleared it to reopen.

The bank performed well over the next several decades, catching the attention of a few potential suitors. Proctor Trust Company offered a merger deal and company was renamed Green Mountain Bank in 1992. In 1996, Mascoma Savings Bank purchased this office along with seven others from Arrow Financial Services. Because the historic nature of the building (it is on the National Register of Historic Places) precluded some modern amenities, a separate drive-up facility is located down the road at 55 Main Street.
